There are many wonderful hairstyles, and well-maintained long hair is certainly one of them.
While it requires a lot of time and effort to care for, long, glossy, and silky hair looks truly beautiful.
Long hair is considered a lovely style today, but looking back in history, there was a time when it was deemed an essential attribute of a beautiful woman.
For noblewomen in the Heian period, in particular, having abundant, long hair was the primary criterion for beauty—the longer, the better.
It is said that they would grow their hair out continuously from childhood through to adulthood.
So, if you decide to grow your hair out, will it just keep growing forever?
Actually, that is not the case.
Our hair has a lifespan known as the “hair cycle,” which typically lasts about six to seven years.
In other words, while hair grows at a rate of roughly 1 cm per month—or 12 cm a year—it reaches the end of its life cycle after about seven years, meaning it generally only grows to a length of around 80 cm.
Once a hair reaches the end of its lifespan, it falls out, and a new hair grows in its place; this cycle repeats continuously.
There are individuals listed in the Guinness World Records with hair exceeding two meters in length, but these are likely exceptional cases involving faster-than-average growth rates and unusually long hair cycles.
