Do you ever find yourself speaking normally, but your voice is too quiet, and people often ask you to repeat yourself?People with naturally loud voices can relatively easily control their volume according to the situation. However, it’s a bit more difficult for people with naturally quiet voices to increase their volume.
Aside from psychological factors, there are mainly three reasons why your voice might be quiet:
① Insufficient breath ② Air leakage ③ Incorrect distance.
Since voice is produced by vibrating the vocal cords while exhaling, insufficient breath will inevitably result in a quieter voice.
People with shallow breathing, or those who don’t breathe properly at all, tend to have quieter voices.
Make a conscious effort to inhale before you start speaking.
Regarding the second point, air leakage:
This occurs when there is enough breath, but the vocal cords are too open, preventing the air from vibrating properly, resulting in air leakage.
In short, to produce a loud voice, you need to pass a sufficient amount of air through appropriately closed vocal cords.
And finally, distance.
People normally control the volume of their voice based on the distance between themselves and the person they are speaking to.
They speak softly to someone next to them and loudly to someone far away, projecting their voice.
Sometimes this “perception of distance” is misaligned, resulting in a quiet voice.
Therefore, it’s recommended to practice speaking as if you’re talking to someone slightly over their head or a little further away.
